In this blog, I am writing to and for those who believe that the Boomers will change what the word Senior means. I also believe that Boomers will change what retirement means in our society. The blog is also for those who are interested in what life after retirement may look like for them. In this blog, I highlight and write about issues that I believe to be important both for Seniors and working Boomers.Royce Shookhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04151496787482536923noreply@blogger.comBlogger5095125tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-312424022929724839.post-69345029929267999462024-03-28T00:00:00.000-07:002024-03-28T00:00:00.136-07:00Mental Health Challenges of Ageism
Ageism doesn't only affect mental health but can also have broader consequences on a senior's overall well-being. It can lead to decreased physical activity, isolation from social connections, and a general feeling of being undervalued. Just because they might take a little longer to get up from the couch doesn't mean they should be pushed to the sidelines. They deserve to be front and center, enjoying life to the fullest.

For many Easter and March is about the holidays and families, except there are many who don't have friends or family. Ageism doesn't just build walls, it can create entire fortresses of social isolation and loneliness. When society perpetuates the belief that older adults are less capable or interesting, it hampers their ability to connect with others and maintain meaningful relationships. It's like throwing an Easter Bunny-themed party but telling the Bunny he can't sit at the cool kids' table because he's too old. How rude!

Ageism in the workplace is all too real. Seniors often face discrimination when it comes to employment opportunities, with employers assuming they lack the skills or adaptability to keep up with younger colleagues. This can lead to financial insecurity and a deeper reliance on social support systems. But let's be honest, they've got more experience in their little finger than most millennials have in their whole body.

Ageism throws up roadblocks at every turn, making it harder for older adults to access essential services and opportunities. From limited healthcare options to restricted social programs, ageism can limit the quality of life for seniors. It's like trying to go on a road trip but realizing that all the roads have barricades that say, "Sorry, you're too old for this adventure." Well, who needs those roads anyway? Seniors will forge their own paths.

So, let's kick ageism to the curb and recognize the value and worth of our older adults. They still have plenty to offer, and it's about time we show them the respect they deserve. After all, we'll all be rocking those high-waisted jeans and reminiscing about the good old days sooner than we think.

Ageism does more than just hurt feelings; it can have a profound impact on the health and well-being of seniors. When older adults are subjected to stereotypes or discrimination based on their age, it can negatively affect their physical and mental health. Studies have shown that ageism can contribute to increased stress levels, higher rates of chronic diseases, and even a shorter lifespan. So, the next time you're tempted to make an ageist joke, remember that it might not be so harmless after all.

Ageism also seeps into healthcare systems and treatment plans. There is a tendency among some healthcare professionals to overlook or dismiss the concerns of older patients, assuming that their symptoms are just a "natural part of aging." This can lead to underdiagnosis, delayed treatment, and ultimately poorer health outcomes for seniors. It's essential for healthcare providers to recognize the unique needs and concerns of older adults and treat them with the same level of care and attention as younger patients.

In addition to receiving subpar treatment, older adults may also face challenges when it comes to making healthcare decisions. Ageist attitudes can undermine the autonomy and agency of older individuals, causing their preferences and wishes to be disregarded. This can result in a loss of control over one's own healthcare decisions, leading to feelings of frustration and helplessness. It's important to involve seniors in healthcare discussions and respect their choices, ensuring that they have a say in their own well-being.

http://www.hummingbirdandbutterfliesgiftshop.com/
Royce Shookhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04151496787482536923noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-312424022929724839.post-15022864327501083042024-03-27T00:00:00.001-07:002024-03-27T00:00:00.143-07:00Creating an Age-Inclusive Society
To combat ageism and promote an age-inclusive society, it is essential to challenge stereotypes and raise awareness about the valuable contributions of seniors. Fostering intergenerational relationships and encouraging advocacy and empowerment initiatives can also help break down age-related barriers. Furthermore, implementing age-friendly policies and legislation that protect the rights and well-being of older adults is crucial in creating a society that values and respects individuals of all ages.

Many countries have laws in place that aim
to protect against age discrimination in various settings, such as employment,
housing, and public services. These laws prohibit unfair treatment based on age
and provide avenues for legal recourse for those who experience ageism. It's
essential to know your rights and understand the protections available to you
or your loved ones.

In recent years, there has been a growing
movement towards age-friendly policies that prioritize the needs and well-being
of older adults. These policies aim to create environments that promote active
aging, social participation, and inclusion. Examples include age-friendly
cities and communities, accessible public transportation, and age-inclusive healthcare
services. By implementing such policies, societies can work towards becoming
more inclusive and supportive of their aging populations.

While legislation and policies are
important steps toward combating ageism, it's necessary to evaluate their
effectiveness. Regular assessments and reviews can help identify gaps or areas
for improvement in existing legal measures. By continually refining and
updating these laws, we can ensure that they remain relevant and effective in
addressing ageism and protecting the rights of seniors.

In conclusion, ageism has far-reaching
consequences for seniors, impacting their health, well-being, and overall
quality of life. It's up to all of us to challenge these prejudices and foster
a more age-inclusive society. By raising awareness, promoting intergenerational
relationships, and advocating for policy changes, we can dismantle ageist
barriers and create a world where people of all ages are valued and respected.
Remember, we're never too old to make a difference!

It is our collective responsibility to
combat ageism and create a future that embraces the wisdom, experience, and
contributions of older adults. Together, let us strive to ensure that every
individual, regardless of age, is treated with dignity, respect, and fairness.

http://www.hummingbirdandbutterfliesgiftshop.com/
Royce Shookhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04151496787482536923noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-312424022929724839.post-10862760540605201002024-03-27T00:00:00.000-07:002024-03-27T00:00:00.143-07:00Firends and Old friends
I was reading a post in The End Game
written by Don Akchin where he said, “The difference between friends and old
friends, in my mind, boils down to this: Friends know what you do and what you
say; old friends know who you are. They know the Original You, before the trappings
of education, marriage, career, successes, disappointments. They still
recognize Original You even through hair loss, weight gain, wrinkles, and wear
and tear. They see through all that to your essence, and they recognize that it
hasn’t changed since you were both children. When you are in the presence of
old friends, there are glimmering moments when you feel the presence of that
innocent child, Original You, once more. The distinction between friends and
old friends is a profound exploration of the evolution of relationships and the
enduring essence of one's true self. The essence of this dichotomy lies in the
depth of understanding that old friends possess—the ability to see beyond the
superficial layers of life and connect with the core of who you are.”

I want to expand on this theme. In the
realm of friendships, friends are acquainted with your current endeavours, the
words you speak, and the actions you take in the present. They are witnesses to
the story you are actively creating in your life—they know the products of
education, marriage, career, successes, and disappointments. These valuable
companions on your journey may mostly connect with the external displays of
your identity.

On the reverse side, old friends go beyond
the boundaries of time and circumstance. Their understanding of you extends to
the origins of your existence. They remember the unvarnished version of you,
untouched by the complexities that life inevitably introduces. This living
connection allows them to recognize the core of your being that remains
unchanged despite the passage of years.

Old friends possess an ability to see
through the external changes that accompany the journey through life. Whether
it's hair loss, weight gain, wrinkles, or the wear and tear of experiences,
they perceive these alterations as mere enhancements to the canvas of your life
story. Beneath these superficial changes, they see the familiar contours of the
person they've known since childhood.

The moments spent with old friends become a
portal to your past, offering glimpses of the innocence that once roamed the
landscapes of your shared history. In their presence, there's a subtle magic
that rekindles your original spirit. They are a reminder of the pure soul that
existed before the complexities of adulthood took hold.

In essence, the distinction between friends
and old friends lies in the depth of connection and understanding. Old friends
are not just witnesses to your life; they are keepers of your truest self,
capable of transporting you back to the unspoiled moments of your shared
history. The magic of old friendships lies in the ability to transcend time,
allowing your essence to persist and shine through, even as the world around
you continues to change. If you are lucky enough to have old friends, make sure
you keep them close. If you have old friends and have not connected with them
for a while, reach out to them. It will be worth it.

http://www.hummingbirdandbutterfliesgiftshop.com/
Royce Shookhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04151496787482536923noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-312424022929724839.post-55075518828020281882024-03-26T00:00:00.000-07:002024-03-26T00:00:00.139-07:00Two eaglets and some ketchup
The eaglets were preparing to leave the nest and fly out into the world when their grandfather happened by. He perched on the side of the nest to wish them well. The eaglets asked what grandfather liked to eat most.

"That'd have to be salmon, or maybe trout. Oh, one day soon you'll find out!"

A granddaughter asked, "What do you usually eat?"

"Rabbits are always good, and squirrels, you've seen squirrels?"

"Sure, we see a lot, running around on the branches."

"Keep an eye out, because those are tasty." Said the grand old eagle.

"An eagle-eye," a smart-mouthed grandson said and was immediately smacked.

The granddaughter asked, "Birds, what about birds, do we eat those?"

"Well some, sure. Seagulls, those are fine and pretty easy to catch." Answered the great eagle.

A grandson asked, "There's a big white bird with long legs, it lives by rivers and streams, do you know? Do you eat those?"

"I think you mean egrets?" his grandfather asked.

"That's right, egrets, have you eaten a lot of those?"

"Egrets, I've had a few, but then again, too few to mention."

Two tomatoes cross the road, and one of them gets squished by a passing car. The other tomato turns to his friend and says, "Come on, ketchup!"

Why did the bicycle fall over? Because it was two-tired of standing up!

http://www.hummingbirdandbutterfliesgiftshop.com/
Royce Shookhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04151496787482536923noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-312424022929724839.post-80820686669905254502024-03-25T00:00:00.000-07:002024-03-25T00:00:00.150-07:00 Things to be Grateful for as You Age
Are you struggling to find things to be

We all have a need to be part of a Tribe. This natural human need for belonging takes center stage during the formative years of growing up. Many of us maintain ties with individuals who once comprised our social circles in school, exemplified by the enduring connections fostered in high school or university. The significance of these relationships becomes evident in activities like attending school reunions or staying in contact with long-time friends.

We readily forge social bonds, resisting the dissolution of existing connections. The impact of belonging on emotional well-being and cognitive processes is profound. The absence of social connections is associated with adverse effects on health, adjustment, and overall well-being. The criteria for a satisfying relationship, emphasizes the need for frequent, positive interactions within a stable and enduring framework of mutual concern.

Belongingness continues to wield its influence as a driving force throughout our lives. Cognitive elements contribute to this need because many of us categorize information in relational terms. The cognitive representations of self and partner intertwine in close relationships, influencing the processing of information about one another. Emotions play a pivotal role in relationship dynamics, with the joy of forming connections contrasting starkly with the negative emotions stemming from exclusion or relationship breakdown.

Happiness, it appears, is intricately linked to the quality and quantity of relationships. Contrary to the belief that material wealth brings happiness, the heart lies in being part of fulfilling and stable relationships. Exclusion from groups or relationship dissolution triggers negative emotions such as anxiety, depression, and jealousy. Loneliness, a chronic state that transcends mere social isolation, underscores the necessity of enduring connections to fulfilling the need to belong.

Researchers have documented the tangible impact of belonging on physical health. Married individuals generally experience better health, longevity, and mental well-being compared to their single, divorced, or widowed counterparts. The detrimental effects of loneliness on health are evident, with lonely individuals more prone to common illnesses and weakened immune systems. Troubled relationships during childhood are linked to conditions like eating disorders in adulthood, emphasizing the long-term repercussions of early social dynamics. Even in the realm of mental health, veterans with robust social support exhibit lower susceptibility to post-traumatic stress disorder.

In essence, the quality of life and longevity are intricately tied to the sense of belonging fostered by supportive and caring relationships. From adolescence to retirement and beyond, the need to belong remains a fundamental aspect of the human experience, shaping our emotional well-being, cognitive processes, and physical health.

http://www.hummingbirdandbutterfliesgiftshop.com/
Royce Shookhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04151496787482536923noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-312424022929724839.post-8287699033598153902024-03-21T00:00:00.000-07:002024-03-21T00:00:00.266-07:00 Tribes.
I read in Sightings over 60 the blog post https://sightingsat60.blogspot.com/2023/11/how-not-to-be-cool.html and was struck by this statement in the blog, “So they asked me, is there a tribe where you say, "Gee, I wish I could join that group."

The answer given was “The question made me chuckle. Because my answer is definitely: "No."

Groucho Marx once famously quipped, "I refuse to join any club that would have me as a member," a sentiment that echoes my own perspective. During my school days, I never identified with any particular group; I wasn't a star athlete (but I was a good one), an academic standout (although I placed on the honour roll usually three terms out of four), or part of the popular crowd but I had school friends. My social circles extended beyond the classroom. Outside of school, I spent weekends with another set of friends, all while maintaining a strong connection with my family, my primary tribe.

As I navigated through life, I, like all of us, found myself a member of various tribes—work groups, family units, recreational circles, and friendship networks. Interestingly, acceptance into these groups was often spontaneous, and I never felt the need to actively seek or maintain membership. Upon retirement, I experienced a shift in my tribal affiliations. Some connections were lost, but new tribes emerged.

In reflection, it seems that retirees, myself included, may find themselves part of multiple tribes. However, this concept isn't exclusive to retirees; throughout our lives, we naturally gravitate toward different tribes for various reasons. Personally, I've cultivated my golf group and connected with senior Board colleagues. Additionally, my wife and I have a circle of friends. These diverse tribes fulfill different aspects of my social and emotional needs, creating a rich tapestry of connections that enhance my overall sense of belonging and fulfillment. What tribe or tribes do you belong to now you have retired?

http://www.hummingbirdandbutterfliesgiftshop.com/
Royce Shookhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04151496787482536923noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-312424022929724839.post-63746534013129670562024-03-20T00:00:00.000-07:002024-03-20T00:00:00.250-07:00Do you have the will to believe or the will to doubt?
Bertrand Russell said, "William James used to preach the “will to believe. I should wish to preach the “will to doubt.” None of our beliefs are quite true; all have at least a penumbra of vagueness and error. The methods of increasing the degree of truth in our beliefs are well known; they consist in hearing all sides, trying to ascertain all the relevant facts, controlling our own bias by discussion with people who have the opposite bias, and cultivating a readiness to discard any hypothesis which has proved inadequate"

William James and his notion of the "will to believe" reflect a pragmatic approach to belief and action. James argued that in situations where evidence is lacking or inconclusive, individuals have the right to choose to believe in something if it leads to positive outcomes or makes their lives more meaningful. This idea is closely tied to the concept of pragmatism, emphasizing the practical consequences of beliefs.

On the other hand, the counterargument, presented by the "will to doubt," aligns with a more skeptical and critical stance. Here, doubt is seen as a valuable tool for refining our understanding of the world. The belief that none of our beliefs are entirely true acknowledges the inherent uncertainty and fallibility of human knowledge. This perspective suggests that fostering doubt can lead to a more accurate and nuanced understanding of the world.

Many schools of thought support the "will to doubt". The scientific method is a prime example of the "will to doubt." Scientists constantly question and test hypotheses, subjecting them to rigorous scrutiny. Through experimentation and peer review, scientific knowledge evolves, and incorrect or incomplete theories are discarded in favor of more accurate ones.

The education system often emphasizes critical thinking skills. Encouraging students to question information, analyze evidence, and consider alternative perspectives fosters a healthy skepticism. This approach helps individuals develop a more nuanced and informed worldview.

In democratic societies, a healthy skepticism is crucial for informed decision-making. Citizens need to question information presented by politicians, the media, and other sources to make well-informed choices. A population that engages in critical thinking contributes to the health of a democracy.

On a personal level, the "will to doubt" can be essential for intellectual and emotional growth. Being open to questioning one's own beliefs and biases can lead to a deeper understanding of oneself and others.

In fields like technology and innovation, doubting the status quo and challenging existing paradigms drive progress. Innovators and inventors often question established norms, leading to breakthroughs and advancements.

The "will to believe" may be pragmatic in certain situations, the "will to doubt" underscores the importance of skepticism and critical thinking in refining our understanding of the world. Both perspectives, when applied carefully, contribute to a balanced and informed approach to belief and knowledge.

http://www.hummingbirdandbutterfliesgiftshop.com/
Royce Shookhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04151496787482536923noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-312424022929724839.post-89222973609777112192024-03-19T00:00:00.000-07:002024-03-19T08:55:43.679-07:00Additional forms of communication to gain of give understanding
In my last post I talked about how we communicate to gain understanding. We employ a wide array of communication forms to gain understanding, connect with others, and express themselves. Here are a few additional forms of communication we use to gain understanding and information.

Nonverbally

Body Language: Gestures, facial expressions, posture, and other nonverbal cues can convey a wealth of information and emotions without the need for words.

Eye Contact: The way people make eye contact can convey sincerity, confidence, or even discomfort. It's a powerful nonverbal form of communication.

Visually

Painting, Drawing, and Sculpture: Visual arts are a powerful means of communication, allowing individuals to express complex emotions, tell stories, or convey abstract concepts through images and symbols.

Photography: Capturing moments in time through photographs is a way to communicate emotions, experiences, and perspectives visually.

Performce

Dance: Dance is a form of expression that transcends language. It can convey emotions, cultural traditions, and stories through movement.

Theater: Acting and stage performance are powerful tools for storytelling and conveying a wide range of emotions and ideas.

Digitally

Emojis and GIFs: In the era of digital communication, emojis and GIFs are used to add emotional nuance to written text, helping to convey tone and sentiment.

Social Media: Platforms like Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook enable individuals to share thoughts, experiences, and emotions through text, images, and videos.

Scientifically

Graphs and Charts: In scientific and technical fields, visual representations such as graphs and charts are used to convey complex data and trends efficiently.

Technical Writing: Clear and concise writing is crucial in fields where precise information needs to be communicated, such as manuals, reports, and academic papers.

Symbolically

Flags and Symbols: Flags represent nations, and symbols can convey cultural, religious, or political meanings. These visual cues communicate identity and values.

Logos: In branding and marketing, logos are designed to convey the essence of a company or product in a simple and memorable way.

Intuitively

Intuition and Empathy: Sometimes, understanding comes through intuition and empathy, where individuals pick up on subtle cues and emotions to connect with others on a deeper level.

These various forms of communication highlight the richness and diversity of expression. They demonstrate that understanding can be gained through channels beyond traditional language, emphasizing the multifaceted nature of how we connect and share our experiences.

http://www.hummingbirdandbutterfliesgiftshop.com/
Royce Shookhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04151496787482536923noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-312424022929724839.post-24298778964736194542024-03-18T00:00:00.000-07:002024-03-18T00:00:00.136-07:00Do we exchange information or seek understanding when we communicate?
The essence of human communication goes beyond the mere transmission of information; it is fundamentally about the exchange of understanding. While information exchange is undoubtedly a crucial aspect of communication, the deeper purpose is to bridge the gap between individuals, fostering a shared comprehension and connection. This profound dimension of communication is particularly evident when it transforms into a conduit for the transfer of tenderness.

Consider the spoken language as a primary form of communication. Words, when used with empathy and genuine intent, have the power to convey emotions, thoughts, and experiences. For instance, when someone expresses concern for a friend going through a difficult time, the exchange is not merely about relaying information regarding the friend's struggles. It becomes an opportunity to convey understanding, empathy, and emotional support, creating a shared emotional space that goes beyond the facts of the situation.

Music, often referred to as the universal language, is another poignant example. When individuals share music, they are not just transmitting notes and rhythms; they are sharing an emotional experience. A melancholic melody or an uplifting tune can evoke feelings that surpass the need for explicit information. In this way, music becomes a powerful medium for the transfer of tenderness, as it has the capacity to connect people on a profound emotional level.

The language of flowers provides yet another example of how communication extends beyond information exchange. Different flowers carry distinct meanings and sentiments. When someone receives a bouquet, it is not merely a collection of plants; it is a symbolic expression of emotions. Whether it's love, friendship, or condolences, the choice of flowers serves as a non-verbal language that communicates understanding and emotional resonance.

These diverse forms of communication—spoken language, music, and the language of flowers—demonstrate humanity's inherent need for meaningful connection. They showcase our capacity to transcend the utilitarian aspect of communication and engage in exchanges that touch the core of our emotional existence. The fact that we have invented and embraced these various languages is a testament to our deep-seated desire for the transfer of tenderness and the establishment of profound connections with one another. In essence, communication serves as a rich tapestry of understanding, weaving together the threads of information and emotion to create a fabric that binds us together in shared human experience.

http://www.hummingbirdandbutterfliesgiftshop.com/
Royce Shookhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04151496787482536923noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-312424022929724839.post-38255770678827829462024-03-17T00:00:00.000-07:002024-03-17T00:00:00.239-07:00Family love them or leave them
Ah, family. The people who raise us, change us, support us — and ultimately, continue to confound us. Most of us would probably attest that our families can be a lot sometimes.

Whether they entail dealing with overbearing parents, unfiltered aunts and uncles, rowdy grandchildren, or moody teenagers, family gatherings can be a little stressful at times. Maybe we have family members who refuse to talk to each other, or there are certain topics guaranteed to trigger explosive arguments at the dinner table. Whatever the case may be, sometimes the only thing we can really do is laugh — to find humour in the inanity of our relatives’ comments and behaviour and choose to see the lighter side of things for our own sanity’s sake. Here are some quotes that speak to the meaning of family gatherings.

"Family: Where life begins and love never ends. Also, where the drama never takes a day off."

"A family is like a team. Irritating one another is just part of the game plan."

"In my family, we don't hide crazy; we put it on the porch and give it a cocktail."

"Home is where you can say anything you like because nobody listens to you anyway."

"Family: Like branches on a tree, we all grow in different directions yet our roots remain as one."

"I come from a family where gravy is considered a beverage."

"A family that laughs together stays together, or at least tolerates each other at Thanksgiving."

"Family gatherings: Where cousins become best friends and aunts and uncles become therapists."

"The family is one of nature's masterpieces, but sometimes even masterpieces need a touch-up."

"You can't choose your family, but you can definitely choose to laugh at their ridiculousness."

"Remember, as far as everyone knows, we are a nice, normal family."

"Family: Where life is messy, but the love is real."

"The family is not just an important thing; it's everything. Especially when you need someone to blame."

"I smile because you're my family. I laugh because there's nothing you can do about it."

"Family dinners are like a mini-reunion of a dysfunctional cast, with every member playing their unique role in the madness."

http://www.hummingbirdandbutterfliesgiftshop.com/
Royce Shookhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04151496787482536923noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-312424022929724839.post-46047716857336314822024-03-16T00:00:00.001-07:002024-03-16T00:00:00.142-07:00Our journey to understand the end
Ultimately our struggle to reconcile the finite with the infinite is deeply personal and subjective. Our journey reflects the profound complexity of human consciousness and the constant quest for meaning and understanding in the face of life's most profound mysteries.

Artists and writers throughout history have examined the intense themes of the search for meaning, the craving for beauty, and the quest to understand what makes our lives meaningful. Here are some examples of artists and their works that explore this theme.

Vincent van Gogh (1853-1890). His vibrant and emotionally charged paintings, such as "Starry Night" and "The Bedroom," reflect his deep connection to nature and his inner emotions. His works are often seen as a quest for beauty and a contemplation of the transcendent.

Leo Tolstoy (1828-1910). In his epic novel "Anna Karenina," the characters grapple with existential questions and the search for a meaningful life. Tolstoy himself went through a spiritual transformation, exploring themes of morality and purpose in works like "War and Peace."

William Wordsworth (1770-1850). As a key figure in the Romantic movement, Wordsworth's poetry, especially in works like "Lines Composed a Few Miles Above Tintern Abbey," explores the sublime beauty of nature and its role in shaping human emotions and understanding.

Frida Kahlo (1907-1954). Her surrealist and introspective paintings, such as "The Two Fridas" and "Self-Portrait with Thorn Necklace and Hummingbird," depict her personal struggles, pain, and the search for identity, making her art a reflection of the human experience.

Haruki Murakami (b. 1949): In his novels like "Norwegian Wood" and "Kafka on the Shore," characters often embark on journeys of self-discovery and existential exploration. His works blend the mundane with the fantastical, creating a unique lens through which to view the search for meaning.

Yayoi Kusama (b. 1929). Her immersive and visually stunning installations, such as "Infinity Mirrored Rooms," convey a sense of cosmic beauty and the infinite. Her work explores themes of repetition, obsession, and the relationship between self and the universe.

Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie (b. 1977), Adichie's novels, including "Half of a Yellow Sun" and "Americanah," delve into the complexities of identity, love, and the pursuit of a meaningful life in the face of societal and personal challenges.

Olafur Eliasson (b. 1967). His immersive and interactive art installations, such as "The Weather Project" at Tate Modern, explore the intersection of art, nature, and human perception. His works often invite viewers to engage with the beauty and complexity of the world around them.

These artists and writers are but a few that over time have contributed to the rich tapestry of human exploration into the meaning of existence, the pursuit of beauty, and the intricate threads that weave together a meaningful life.

http://www.hummingbirdandbutterfliesgiftshop.com/
Royce Shookhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04151496787482536923noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-312424022929724839.post-67319693667341684102024-03-16T00:00:00.000-07:002024-03-16T00:00:00.142-07:00Beware the ides of March
"Beware the Ides of March" means "Beware of March 15th." The Ides of March was March 15th on the calendar in ancient Rome; it was also the day on which Julius Caesar was assassinated and the day is associated with death. So what happens when someone we love dies?

When someone we love dies, it's like facing an unfathomable mystery. No matter what our beliefs are, the idea that the vibrant thoughts and feelings within us could simply disappear feels incomprehensible. Even if we grasp the concept that we're made of borrowed stardust, destined to return to the vast universe, the understanding blurs into abstract anxiety as the body approaches dissolution.

The complexity of our minds struggles to grasp the idea of timeless nothingness. We are animated by fleeting electrical impulses and temporary interactions of matter, making it challenging to conceive a state of infinite inanimacy—a void beyond existence.

In those moments of loss, we yearn for a way to make sense of it all. Many artists and writers over time have beautifully explored the search for meaning, our craving for beauty, and what makes our lives meaningful. Writers ask profound questions as they struggle for answers: How can we comprehend something without substance? How can mortal creatures understand things that exist forever? Creative souls over time have spoken about the deep human struggle to reconcile the finite nature of our existence with the infinite unknown that follows.

The deep human struggle to reconcile the finite nature of our existence with the infinite unknown is a fundamental aspect of the human experience, touching upon existential questions that have puzzled philosophers, theologians, artists, and thinkers throughout history.

We are unique in our awareness of our own mortality. Unlike other animals, we possess the cognitive ability to contemplate our existence and the inevitability of death. This awareness can lead to profound existential anxiety as we grapple with the idea that our time is limited.

In the face of mortality, we seek meaning and purpose in our lives. The awareness of our finite existence prompts questions about the significance of our actions, relationships, and contributions to the world. Many of us turn to philosophy, religion, or personal reflection to find a sense of purpose that transcends the chronological nature of life.

The infinite unknown beyond death is a source of fear and uncertainty. Our mind, wired to understand and navigate the tangible world, finds it challenging to conceptualize a state of existence beyond the boundaries of time and space. This fear of the unknown often drives individuals to seek solace in religious beliefs, spiritual practices, or philosophical frameworks that offer explanations or assurances about what comes after death.

To mitigate the finiteness of individual existence, we often strive to create a lasting legacy. Whether through creative works, achievements, or the impact on others, we seek ways to transcend our own mortality by leaving a meaningful imprint on the world.

Different cultures and religions provide diverse narratives and beliefs about the afterlife or the continuation of existence beyond death. These beliefs offer frameworks for understanding and coping with the finite nature of life, providing a sense of continuity or purpose that extends beyond the earthly realm.

Philosophers and thinkers have engaged in profound contemplation about the nature of existence, consciousness, and the afterlife. The quest to understand the relationship between the finite and the infinite has given rise to diverse philosophical perspectives, from existentialism to metaphysical inquiries about the nature of reality.

http://www.hummingbirdandbutterfliesgiftshop.com/
Royce Shookhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04151496787482536923noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-312424022929724839.post-74030293713729789022024-03-14T00:00:00.000-07:002024-03-14T00:00:00.148-07:00Empowering Communities: The Transformative Impact of Supporting Your Local Food Bank
In a world filled with constant hustle and bustle, it's easy to lose sight of the struggles faced by our neighbours, friends, and even family members. While we're caught up in the whirlwind of our daily lives, there are individuals in our community who are grappling with the harsh reality of food insecurity. It's time for us to come together and make a difference by supporting our local food banks.

Picture this: A child going to bed with a growling stomach, a parent skipping meals to ensure their children eat, or a senior citizen forced to choose between groceries and medication. These scenarios are not as distant as we might think. Food insecurity affects millions of people worldwide, and your local food bank plays a crucial role in alleviating this issue within your community.

Supporting your local food bank goes beyond providing meals; it's about building a foundation of strength, resilience, and compassion within your community. Here's why you should be motivated to contribute:

1. Nourishing the Future

Children are the future, and their potential should never be hindered by an empty stomach. By supporting your local food bank, you're investing in the well-being of the younger generation. A well-nourished child is better equipped to focus in school, learn effectively, and build the skills necessary for a brighter future.

2. Strengthening Community Bonds

Communities thrive when individuals come together for a common cause. Volunteering or donating to your local food bank fosters a sense of unity and shared responsibility. It's a chance to meet like-minded individuals, forge new connections, and work towards a collective goal of ensuring no one in your community goes to bed hungry.

3. Empowering Individuals and Families

Food insecurity can be a vicious cycle, impacting not only individuals but entire families. By contributing to your local food bank, you're offering a lifeline to those facing tough times. Access to nutritious food empowers individuals and families to break free from the cycle of poverty and take steps toward a more stable and prosperous future.

4. Tackling Food Waste

Supporting your local food bank is not just about helping those in need; it's also about reducing food waste. Many food banks work with local businesses to rescue surplus food that would otherwise end up in landfills. Your support contributes to a more sustainable and environmentally friendly community.

5. Encouraging Gratitude and Generosity

Gratitude is a powerful force. When you witness the impact of your support on someone's life, it cultivates a sense of gratitude within yourself. This, in turn, encourages a cycle of generosity, inspiring others to join the cause and create a ripple effect of positive change.

In conclusion, supporting your local food bank is not just an act of charity; it's an investment in the well-being of your community. Every contribution, whether big or small, plays a part in creating a more compassionate and resilient society. So, let's unite, lift each other up, and make a lasting impact on the lives of those who need it most. Together, we can build a community where no one is left behind, one meal at a time.

http://www.hummingbirdandbutterfliesgiftshop.com/
Royce Shookhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04151496787482536923noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-312424022929724839.post-15216169999505237142024-03-13T00:00:00.000-07:002024-03-13T00:00:00.139-07:00 Invisible and Older Faces of Canada’s Opioid Crisis
Opioids, commonly referred to as
“narcotics,” are potent medications used widely to treat pain — but they also
have strong potential for misuse and addiction. Over the past decade, the
opioid crisis in Canada has become a major, growing public health emergency.
Two comprehensive factors have contributed to the acceleration of the opioid
crisis in Canada. First, opioid prescription rates have risen steadily over the
past 30 years to today’s extremely high levels, and despite recent decreases in
opioid prescription rates, Canada remains one of the largest consumers of
prescription opioids in the world.

the opioid crisis in Canada, various responses have been launched in an attempt
to curb some of these alarming trends. However, older adults have been largely

consuming non-prescribed opioids and experiencing high rates of
overdose, many people are unaware that older Canadians actually bear the
largest burden from opioids — mostly from prescription sources. Compared to all
other age groups, older adults have the highest rate of prescription opioid
consumption, as well as the highest rates of side effects, overdoses and
mortality associated with prescription opioids. This is strongly related to the fact that older adults experience more chronic pain compared to any other age group, and opioids are very
commonly used in this population to manage pain symptoms. There are several
factors that make older adults more likely to experience an overdose when using
opioids, including age-related metabolic changes; a higher likelihood of also taking multiple other medications — including other sedatives — which
increases the risk of dangerous drug interactions; and higher rates of more
severe chronic pain that require higher doses of opioids to manage symptoms.
Together, these factors put older adults at higher risk of overdose, hospitalization,
and death when consuming opioids. Older adults are also at greater risk of
other side effects from opioids,
including nausea and constipation, which can negatively impact their overall
quality of life.

explored research on older adults’ knowledge of opioids, as well as their
perspectives on opioid-related policies. Sadly, there is once again a paucity
of research and policy on this front in Canada, but research done elsewhere
suggests that many older adults know little about opioids and the potential
risk of serious outcomes such as overdose.

policy implications for older adults that require specific consideration. For
instance, a recent national poll of older Americans found that many older
adults hold onto unused opioids out of fear they will need them again and that
many opioid disposal options are inaccessible to older Americans. Further,
opioids remain the medication of choice in suicide attempts among older adults
in the U.S. and Canada.

In response to the scarcity of
Canadian data about opioid use and outcomes in older adults, the NIA obtained
and analyzed data from the Canadian Institute for Health Information (CIHI) on
opioid-related prescriptions, hospitalizations, and emergency department visits
from 2015 to 2020. Their analysis suggests that, despite variations between
provinces and territories, there is a high rate of prescription opioid use
among older Canadians. Between 2015 and 2020, prescription rates for older
adults have tended to decline overall, particularly for some stronger
formulations (i.e. fentanyl and oxycodone), and increased or remained stable
for others (i.e. hydromorphone), while rates

Words carry powerful associations. When
discussing older individuals, opt for terms like "older person" or
"older adult" instead of terms like "senior citizen" or
"elderly," which can perpetuate negative stereotypes. For example,
replacing "aging dependents" with more neutral terms like "older
individuals" promotes inclusivity.

Avoid: "Seniors," "elderly,"
"aging dependents," and "the aged."

Talk Affirmatively About Changing
Demographics

Emphasize the positive aspects of increased
life expectancy. Instead of using terms like "silver tsunami" or
"graying of the population," highlight opportunities for
intergenerational exchanges and contributions from older individuals. For

Avoid: "Age wave," "silver

Social Context

Challenge the notion that aging outcomes
are solely the result of individual choices. Instead, underscore the
interconnectedness of individuals and advocate for collective actions and
policy-level solutions to improve the lives of all as they age. For example,
avoid terms like "choice" and "control" and replace them
with ideas about collective responsibility.

Avoid: "Choice," "planning,"

Ensure clarity by defining ageism whenever
the term is used. Provide concrete examples to help people understand the
impact of ageism on health and society. For instance, avoid using the word

One way to bring more awareness to the issue is to improve the public’s understanding of aging. Reframing Aging, a United States research group in its research found that there are stark differences between what professionals in the field of aging believe about older people and the process of aging and what the public believes. We need to find better ways to talk about aging so that the public learns the whole story about aging, not just the incomplete version that focuses on dependence and disability. Some of these gaps include:

Key Drivers of Aging Outcomes

While professionals working in the field of aging recognize the role of contextual, social, and systemic factors in shaping the process and experience of aging, the public sees individuals and their will and personal decisions as determining the shape and outcomes of the life course.

Attitude Toward Aging

Professionals working in the field of aging believe that aging brings new opportunities and capacities for growth, contribution, and self-expression, while the public sees few positive aspects of aging and views age as an opponent to fight.

Outcomes of Increased Longevity

Advocates and professionals in the field of aging recognize that increased longevity brings both challenges and opportunities. It may mean more years living on a fixed income, living with chronic conditions that require treatment and support, and living beyond our ability to drive our own cars. At the same time, it may mean more opportunities to contribute to families and communities and experience new things for the first time. We know that there are many ways to meet these challenges and maximize these opportunities through programs, policies, education, and new attitudes. The public, on the other hand, sees only the challenges and is not confident that much can be done to ensure well-being in older age.

Policy Solutions

While professionals working in the field of aging explain that successful adaptation to an aging society requires adjustments across the full spectrum of our national infrastructure, the public has largely not considered public policy as a solution.

Ageism

Professionals working in the field of aging are attuned to the myriad ways that older people face discrimination in our society, however, the public is largely not aware of ageism or the need to address it.

To address the lack of knowledge about ageism and its impacts, advocates need to define ageism, explain the problem and its consequences, and suggest systemic solutions in messages about ageism.

http://www.hummingbirdandbutterfliesgiftshop.com/
Royce Shookhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04151496787482536923noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-312424022929724839.post-49103797994632402402024-03-10T00:00:00.003-08:002024-03-10T00:00:00.127-08:00Good leadership is
Have you ever been fortunate enough to collaborate with truly inspiring leaders? Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV), a prevalent respiratory virus in Canada, can impact the well-being of seniors aged 65 and above. While some may perceive the need for preventive measures as unnecessary, understanding the importance of protection against RSV is crucial for a vibrant and active lifestyle in our senior years.

RSV primarily infects the airways and lungs, leading to respiratory complications. Though RSV infections typically manifest as mild cold-like symptoms, seniors are among the most vulnerable to severe complications. Unlike the temporary immunity acquired by children, adults over 65 may experience repeated infections, putting them at a higher risk of hospitalization, mechanical ventilation, and ICU admission. Shockingly, the mortality rate among seniors due to RSV infections is six times greater than that of infants under one year old.

It's important to note that RSV is more contagious than seasonal influenza, emphasizing the need for proactive measures. While influenza-related hospitalizations are more common among seniors, the risk of mortality with RSV is comparable, underscoring the severity of RSV infections in this age group.

Currently, there are no specific treatments for RSV, making prevention a key focus. Monoclonal antibodies are available for certain groups, but their high cost and limited availability in older age groups have hindered widespread use. Encouragingly, advancements in vaccine development offer hope, with three vaccines—Arexvy, Abrysvo™, and mRNA-1345—showing significant efficacy against RSV.

To motivate seniors to prioritize RSV protection, it's essential to address the existing barriers. Awareness of RSV and its potential impact needs enhancement through ongoing education. Healthcare providers play a pivotal role in improving understanding and access to recommended vaccines, dispelling misconceptions about their necessity in older adults.

The National Immunization Association (NIA) presents evidence-informed recommendations for comprehensive RSV protection:

Promote General Preventive Practices: Encourage seniors to adopt preventive measures against RSV, fostering a proactive approach to health.

Improve Surveillance: Enhance monitoring of RSV infections and mortality, providing a clearer understanding of its impact on healthcare systems.

Continue Vaccine Development: Support ongoing efforts to develop effective RSV vaccines for all age groups.

Promote Life-Course Vaccination: Emphasize the importance of vaccinations throughout one's life, including older adults.

Free RSV Vaccinations: Provide cost-free RSV vaccinations for populations where it is deemed cost-effective.

Follow NACI Statements: Encourage adherence to National Advisory Committee on Immunization (NACI) statements regarding RSV vaccinations.

Clinician Education: Equip healthcare providers with knowledge and support for delivering RSV vaccinations, including pharmacists and primary care professionals.

Harmonize Vaccination Administration: Streamline vaccination procedures across provinces, ensuring consistency and accessibility.

Accurate Reporting: Establish robust reporting and monitoring systems to track RSV vaccination rates accurately.

By embracing these recommendations, we can fortify our defences against RSV, creating a healthier, more resilient community of seniors. Let's unite in our commitment to proactive health practices, ensuring a vibrant and fulfilling future for all.

http://www.hummingbirdandbutterfliesgiftshop.com/
Royce Shookhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04151496787482536923noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-312424022929724839.post-12323284710104385652024-03-07T00:00:00.021-08:002024-03-07T00:00:00.173-08:0025 life lessons
1. However, it's crucial to find ways to regain your sense of purpose and belief in life. Coming to terms with your health limitations can be one of life's most daunting trials, especially for seniors. At times, we may feel invincible, but then reality sets in, revealing that our well-being is more fragile than we thought. Serious illnesses, such as cancer or Parkinson's, can arrive unexpectedly, leaving us with life-altering challenges. These conditions may feel like life sentences, and it's natural to wish for more time.

If you find yourself facing the possibility of mortality, consider this as an opportunity to cherish your health and life. Your health is a precious asset that allows you to spend more quality time with those you love. Take a moment to make arrangements for your future, relieving your loved ones of the burden of difficult decisions. Although it may be an uncomfortable subject, discussing your feelings and your need for support with family and friends can help alleviate the emotional burden.

While some aspects of facing mortality must be confronted individually, you don't have to go through this journey alone. Seek comfort, advice, and companionship from your loved ones. You deserve to live the life you've always dreamed of, even in the face of challenges.

Consider having open and honest conversations with your partner or family members. Share the things you've always wanted to do and create a list to work through them one by one. Strengthen your relationships by spending meaningful time with the people you care about. Instead of dwelling on conflicts, use this time to express your love and appreciation. Every day is a gift, and it's essential to live each day as if it were your last, regardless of the circumstances.

Even if the future may seem uncertain, there are steps you can take to make the most of the time you have left. Prioritize your health by maintaining a balanced diet, getting adequate sleep, and incorporating regular exercise into your routine. While it's necessary to come to terms with the challenges you face, it's equally important to give back to others and create lasting memories.

Take this opportunity to reassess your life and consider its unpredictable nature. Life is full of mysteries; some people live to be a hundred, while others face adversity early on. We all have our unique destinies, and it's essential to embrace each day as a precious gift. Remember that your life is interconnected with the lives of those who love you. Your journey isn't just about you; it's about the impact you've had on the people who cherish you.

In the face of health challenges, maintaining hope, living fully, and nurturing your relationships can help you regain belief in the beauty of life, regardless of the difficulties you may encounter.

http://www.hummingbirdandbutterfliesgiftshop.com/
Royce Shookhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04151496787482536923noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-312424022929724839.post-7411267277561306342024-03-05T00:00:00.016-08:002024-03-05T00:00:00.243-08:00Do you believe in magic, in a yongsters soul?
Researching and studying different belief systems and religions is a valuable and enriching endeavour that can provide profound insights and comfort for your soul while addressing your questions.
