In this post I look at how charities help senior
deal with government red tape.
Tax clinics help low-income seniors navigate
complex paperwork. Unison filed 5,974 tax returns at its free tax clinic in
2024, supporting 5,568 seniors. Many Seniors Resource Centres.
like us, help seniors with everything from completing government forms to
choosing long-term care facilities and assists those dealing with elder abuse.
Housing and shelter is another critical area. The
Old Brewery Mission in Montreal recently opened the Mirella and Lino Saputo
Pavilion, a rehousing facility for 27 seniors experiencing or at risk of
homelessness, with community gardens, organized activities, and supportive
housing teams. The organization notes that 44% of Montreal's homeless
population is aged 50 and over, and homelessness causes premature aging,
meaning many are considered seniors from age 50.
Health and wellness programming extends beyond meals. The Gilmore Lodge Community Hub in Fort Erie offers group exercises, wellness education, and adult day programs alongside rehabilitation services . Across Ontario, 416 Seniors Active Living Centres (SALC) receive provincial funding to deliver recreational, social, and lifestyle activities, with 100 new centres added in the past year
