The Courage to Lose Sight of the Shore

"We cannot discover new oceans unless we have the courage to lose sight of the shore."

I have always loved that quote. It captures something essential about transition. You cannot stay in the harbour and expect to find anything new. At some point, you have to let go of the familiar and venture into the unknown.

For seniors, that can feel like a big ask. You have spent a lifetime building stability. You have created a life, a home, a community. You have earned the right to feel safe. Why would you risk that now?

Because the shore is not going anywhere. It will still be there if you need to come back. But if you never leave it, you will never know what else is out there.

The seniors I admire most are the ones who are still willing to lose sight of the shore. They are the ones who move to a new city at seventy-five. Who start a new hobby at eighty. Who make new friends in their nineties. They are the ones who understand that growth does not stop just because you have reached a certain age.

They are also the ones who have learned to be comfortable with discomfort. They know that feeling lost is part of the journey. They know that the liminal space is not a detour. It is the path.

If you are in transition right now, whether you are thirty or eighty, remember this: you have been here before. You have survived transitions that once seemed impossible. You have made endings, inhabited neutral zones, and made new beginnings. You know how to do this.

The shore is behind you. The ocean is ahead. And you have everything you need to navigate it.

What would it look like to lose sight of the shore today? Not forever. Just for a moment. Just to see what might be waiting.
