The Friends Who Know Your Story

The older we get, the more precious old friends become. They are the people who remember us before careers, mortgages, grandchildren, sore knees, and reading glasses. They knew us when our hair was thicker, our waistlines were smaller, and we thought sixty sounded ancient.

Recently, a friend shared that someone he had known for many years had passed away. I didn't know the person, but I felt the sadness in his voice. Then he said something that stayed with me:

"You can't replace an old friend with another old friend."

He's right. New friendships are wonderful, but only old friends have walked beside us through decades of victories, mistakes, laughter, heartbreak, and unforgettable memories.

Those shared experiences become part of who we are.

Think of one old friend you haven't spoken to in months, or even years. Pick up the phone or send a message that simply says:

"I was thinking about you today."  Friendships don't survive on memories alone. They need small moments of attention. Your call may brighten their day as much as yours.
