Hey its your birthday

The time of this month holds significant meaning for me as this is my birthday month. I consider myself fortunate to have celebrated numerous birthdays throughout the years, recognizing that not everyone has had the same opportunity. The concept of a birthday revolves around commemorating, acknowledging, and appreciating the life of an individual who has been born. It is a time to celebrate the existence of someone dear to us, transcending the mere act of exchanging gifts or organizing gatherings for family and friends. Indeed, it serves as a tribute to the person's life.

Interestingly, the tradition of celebrating birthdays is not as ancient as one might think. The earliest references to birthdays can be traced back to Ancient Egypt, where grand festivities were held in honour of the Pharaoh. These celebrations were symbolic of the Pharaoh's birth as a 'god' and were considered coronation dates. The first recorded instance of such a celebration can be found in the Hebrew Bible, describing a similar event for an Egyptian Pharaoh.

In the early history of the Christian church, birthdays were regarded as Pagan and were not permitted. However, around the fourth century, the birth of Jesus began to be celebrated, leading to a shift in the church's perspective. It is believed that the church embraced birthday celebrations with the intention of converting those who observed the Roman holiday of Saturnalia.

Ancient Rome is credited as the first society to celebrate birthdays for non-religious figures, albeit exclusively for men. It wasn't until the 12th century that women began to have birthday celebrations.

The modern-day customs associated with birthday parties can be traced back to Germany in the late 18th century. By this time, birthday celebrations had gained widespread acceptance worldwide. For instance, in China, a child's first birthday held special significance and was commemorated as a distinct event. In Germany, the precursor to contemporary birthday parties, known as Kinderfeste, emerged. These celebrations involved a birthday cake adorned with candles representing the child's age, with an additional candle symbolizing the year ahead. Blowing out the candles and making a wish also originated from this tradition.

Different cultures and religions attribute varying levels of importance to specific birthdays. For example, Japan celebrates Coming of Age Day on the second Monday of January, honouring those who turned 20 in the past year as they enter adulthood. Jewish boys and girls have their bar and bat mitzvahs, respectively, on their 12th or 13th birthdays, depending on their religious affiliation. Many Hispanic countries, along with Brazil, celebrate QuinceaƱeras, which mark a girl's transition from childhood to young adulthood on her 15th birthday. In Canada and the USA, the age at which one is considered an adult varies between 19 and 21, depending on the laws of the state or province.

In an earlier post, I posted about the fact that we have big celebrations for special milestone birthdays and when we were younger we celebrated coming of age at 18 19 or 21 (depending on the laws of the land) then every 10-year milestone such as 30, 40, 50, 60. At age 60 the milestones became shorter so we celebrate our 65th, 70th 75th, 80th, 85th, 90th, etc. I am between milestone birthdays but I hope to be here to celebrate the next milestone.

Happy Birthday

It is always hard to be apart from the ones you love on special days. Today is my daughter's birthday here but it was her birthday yesterday where she lives. I was going to say home but I could not do it, as I still believe that where her mom and I live and where she grew up is her home.

I hope that the celebration of your birthday was filled with friends, your Aussie family and love. It has been a long time since we have seen each other and her mom and I miss her. We hope that COVID restrictions will be relaxed soon so that the planned trip to Canada in January can be booked and taken. We will then celebrate all of the holidays and special days we have missed because of the Pandemic. We look forward to celebrating three birthdays and two Christmas when we get together. We cannot wait.

Milestone Birthday Party Ideas

It is a time for celebrating birthdays. Are you soon going to be having a Milestone birthday (50, 60, 70, 80) and worried about your next birthday party? Don't be every birthday is the perfect opportunity to celebrate your life. You are alive and that means you should mark that event with your friends and your family. Your birthday should be one that brings together friends and family to a wonderful celebration of your life while you are here to enjoy the celebration.  I am confident that a few of the ideas here may get your creativity up and running and help you design a great idea for your own birthday party or plan a big surprise for someone you love.

What about having a birthday party that is a roast. I  see roasts on television. They are sacrilegious and sometimes very funny. A warning a birthday roast will only work if you have friends and family who can do this well. If you are the subject of a roast, you should have a sense of humour and not be easily offended; if you are planning for a friend, you should make sure they are not easily offended. Make sure everyone knows the theme of the roast beforehand and a good idea is to have a list of those who will go first to set the stage. If you want a night of laughs this is one way to celebrate your life and the friends you have. By the end of the roast, you may lose some friends but who wants friends that don't have a good sense of humour.

Another idea is to have a PowerPoint or slideshow, to show various events throughout the guest of honour’s life. By doing this you pay tribute to someone that has meant a great deal to you while they are here to see what they mean to you. When you are developing this idea, think about having a red carpet for the star to enter on and allow friends and family to pay their tributes to the guest of honour by talking about the good things they have done. This idea is a lot more sentimental than a roast but will mean a lot to the person you are honouring.

What about an Old West or Gold Rush theme? This theme would be fun to organize and people would have fun when they attend. Having a room dressed up as a Wild West saloon and everyone could come dressed in their favourite western gear. Facebook and Youtube, Instagram will be filled with delighted partygoers whooping it up and doing their best square dance impersonations. Good food and many western style drinks will keep the guests and the guest of honour happy and full of western cheer.

Of course, there is always the Grim Reaper "over the hill" birthday theme. Be creative and use your knowledge of the guest of honour to make your theme party different from all the others. Use your knowledge of the birthday man or women to create the perfect celebration of life for them. An idea might be to make this birthday an out of this world experience and use a supernatural theme.

Your sense of creativity and playfulness can help make any milestone birthday memorable. Remember nothing is too excessive, as long as you know the nature of the guest of honour. Milestone parties, like a 50th, 60th, or 70th doesn’t mean the birthday man or women is not long for this world and life. At any stage, we should celebrate and honour those we care about.

A great party can be fun, show creativity and a sense of caring al it takes is some thoughtful planning and a good group of friends and family to make it happen. If you needed some for inspiration I hope the thoughts mentioned point you in the correct direction, if not solve your planning woes.

Celebrating Your 50th Birthday!

Millions of people turn 50 each year and you are not alone! There are actually many individuals who have those feelings of sorrow on their 50th birthday for one reason or another. Sometimes those feelings are combined with thoughts that your life is almost over and other time the feelings are accompanied by a mild depression and thoughts that you haven't accomplished much of anything in your life. However, chances are that none of what you are thinking about on your 50th birthday is true and the reality is that your 50th birthday is just as important as the one before it and the birthday that comes after it!

If you are one of those individuals who are starting to feel hopeless on your 50th birthday then you may just want to take a look in the mirror. However, you are not going to look in the mirror for the sole purpose of trying to find all the wrinkles that you've gained, but you'll be looking deep inside yourself to see the things that you've actually accomplished, the people that you've helped, the family that you've given joy to, along with many of the other hopes and joys that you have experienced along the years!

Finding Hope When You're 50!

Hopelessness and helplessness are two feelings of despair which you absolutely do not need to be feeling! As was mentioned, there are many people throughout the world who turn 50 each year and you are absolutely not the only one. If you have a family then you can bet that they'll be wishing you a "Happy Birthday" as well, but maybe you should consider beating them to the punch-line! Here are a few reasons to be happy about your 50th Birthday!

Benefits for Senior Citizens

One thing that may be a fun and cute little perk to enjoy about your 50th birthday is the ability to receive the Senior Citizens' Discount at the many stores and restaurants that offer them. Many stores and businesses appreciate their fellow senior citizens by giving them special discounts up to 10, 15, and even 25% off of the items that they buy! Wait, though: it might not be at age 50 when you are able to receive the Senior Citizen's Discount, but it's sure a fun thing to look forward to!

Retirement!

Depending on what age you are going to retire at, you may be just nearing that retirement stage. There are many people who decide to retire at age 50, but then there are many others who decide to retire a few years after their 50th birthday! In any case, though, your retirement years are just around the corner and you can begin to start thinking and dreaming about all the fun things you'll be doing!

All in all, there is no reason to be depressed and down in the dumps on your 50th birthday! Just by thinking about your 50th birthday as another year on the chalk line should make you happy and relieved! After all, turning 50 is not the end of the world!

Recognition

We all love recognition, and what better day to receive it is on our birthday. When we were small our parents gave us the best day they could, parties, friends, presents, and cake. We all have fond memories of birthday's past. Our special day is a that because we know that someone values us, and care that we are in this world.

As we age, some of us try to put up the front that we don't want any more birthdays, and some go out of their way to hide their birthday. I believe it is not the birth day that is the problem, it is the recognition that we are getting one day older. As we get older we understand that our time on earth is finite and that each passing year brings us closer to the end of that time. Our birthdays are special and one should never underestimate the immense importance of one's birthday, to that person, on that very day.

Birthdays are like, really, really HUGE. They can be days when we are surrounded by the wisest of the wise, scared to pieces by rumours of tigers, volcanoes, and cough medicine. or laughing at the newest joke or story told by friends. On our birthday we are the heroes or heroines' of our life story. Once a year, we can be encouraged by tales of past romance, adventure, and comedies in our life and we can look forward to future romance, adventure, and comedy in our life. For one day our existence on earth is celebrated by our friends loved ones and family, and we feel recognized and loved.
