Why do adults need vaccines?

It is a near the time that my wife and I are due to get our Coronavirus vaccine update and I was thinking about if adults needed vaccines since most of my age group was vaccinated when we were younger. The Immunization site for British Columbia https://immunizebc.ca/  has information for adults. Here is some of what they have to say. If you have questions about vaccination check with your own doctor and stay up to date with the vaccines that you need.

Here are five important reasons why adults need vaccines:

1.  Some diseases are more common in adults

As you get older, your risk for certain diseases (such as shingles and pneumococcal disease) increases.

2. Protection from some vaccines can wear off over time

As you get older, the protection from some vaccines you received at a younger age can wear off. Booster doses are needed to ensure continued protection. For example, a booster dose of tetanus/diphtheria (Td) vaccine is recommended for adults every 10 years.

3. You may be at risk for new and different disease

Your age, lifestyle, job, travel plans, or health condition may put you at risk for new and different diseases. For example, adults who work in healthcare settings or who have multiple sexual partners are at risk for hepatitis B, adults with certain chronic health conditions are at risk for pneumococcal disease, and adults who are travelling internationally may be at risk for diseases we don’t see here in Canada. Learn about travel vaccines here.

4. New vaccines have become available

To protect people of all ages, scientists are working hard to develop new vaccines. For example, the human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine and shingles vaccine are both fairly new vaccines and are recommended for some adults. Even new vaccines have been studied for a long time and are known to be safe.

5. When you get vaccinated, you help protect others too

When you get vaccinated, you help protect others by making it less likely that you will get and spread a disease. This helps protect those who can’t be vaccinated, such as very young babies and people with certain medical conditions.

Where can you get vaccinated?

You can get publicly-funded vaccines from your local health unit, most pharmacies, and some doctors’ offices. You can purchase non-publicly funded vaccines at most pharmacies and travel clinics. Services vary throughout B.C.

Keeping track of your vaccinations

Keeping a current record of your vaccinations is important. Learn more about vaccine records.

Reducing pain, stress, and anxiety with vaccinations

If you're avoiding getting vaccinated because you have a fear of needles, you're not alone. Pain or fear associated with vaccinations can cause stress and anxiety for many adults and can lead some to delay getting vaccinated or avoid vaccines altogether. Fortunately, there are many strategies that can be used before and during the appointment to help reduce pain, stress, and anxiety with vaccinations. Use the tips discussed here for a more positive vaccination experience.

Be the reason someone believes and other thoughts

Be the reason someone believes in good people

When you die people cry and beg for you to come back but when you do there’s the running and the screaming.

We live in a time where intelligent people are being silenced sot that stupid people won’t be offended.

It’s better to grow old with a sense of humour than to grow old with no sense at all.

She said, there was no spark between us anymore. So, I tasered her! (I will ask again when she wakes up).

I woke up this morning determined to drink less, eat right and exercise… But that was 4 hours ago… when I was younger and full of hope!

Do you know what the nice things are about winter? Neither do I.

When I lost the fingers on my right hand in a freak accident, I asked the doctor if I would still be able to write with it. He said, “Probably, but I wouldn’t count on it.”

The school called today and said, “Your son is telling lies.”

“Well,’ I replied, “He must be really good because I don’t have any kids”

Reading gives us someplace to go when we have to stay where we are.

My wife said, “Our new neighbours are so in love. He kisses her, strokes her hair, and hugs her. Why don’t you do that?”

I said, “Because I don’t know her that well yet.”

A man and a woman were travelling on a train. The woman says, “Every time you smile, I feel like inviting you to my place.”

The man says, “Aww……….! Are you single”?

The woman answers, “No I am a Dentist!”

Transitions and field trips

We were talking to my daughter about our grandson finishing his elementary school year and moving on to grade seven. Transitions to high school is a big step forward for any young person and it can be scary, challenging and fun. However, before he moves up, he has one more field trip to take. In his school since he has been in grade four the school has held a yearly field trip for each grade, he has been in. Every year the grade six class gets to spend five days in Ballarat touring the city and the town of Sovereign Hills. They leave in about a week and the children will get the chance to o relive the Gold Rush of the 1850s and ’60s and learn about the significance of the Eureka Stockade. They will try their hand at panning for gold and discover through re-enactments and artifacts the days when gold nuggets could be unearthed with a pen knife! My wife and I visited Ballarat and Sovereign Hills about five years ago and there were hundreds of elementary school children enjoying the day. It will be a trip my grandson will remember for the rest of his life.

As we talked about the upcoming field trip for him, I thought about the memorable field trips I had been on when I was in school. we did not do overnight field trips when I was in school. The trips we had were day trips, but they were memorable. The most exciting trips I went on were arranged by our Science teacher. We were able to climb to the top of our local mountain and visit the Fire Look Out station. It was a full day trip, and it was fun as we walked up an old trail to the top. Near the top, all of us boys would race to see who would be the first to the top. Our own king of the castle. I think it was to impress the girls and I remember I never was first; I usually was in the top five. We did this trip three years in a row.

It was so much fun that when my wife (girlfriend at the time) came to my town to visit for the first time, we hiked up to the mountain. A great time and I think I impressed her as we were married two years later.

Another trip was for our year end party at the end of grade 9, we were all transitioning to the high school, so our teachers arranged a day at a resort on the south side of town. There was a swimming pool, a beach, picnic tables and a good time was had by all. What field trips leap to your mind when thinking about your school life?
