May flowers

In 1557 Thomas Tusser compiled a collection of writings he called A Hundred Good Points of Husbandry. In the April Husbandry section he wrote:
Sweet April showers
Do spring May flowers

which became over time the phrase that most of us know as April showers, bring May flowers. The phrase may be invoked when we want to put a positive spin on a negative event in our life. So the poem or phrase can also mean something good may happen as a result of unpleasant events.

Some of selected April Showers Bring May Flowers Poem:

Sunny Side
Always look at the sunny side of life
the ups and the downs
the truth of a beginning
we need water to grow
we need seeds to sow

What we see today
is bringing us more
for tomorrow
even if we can’t tell

as they say
april showers bring may flowers.

Spring Garden
In the garden, the flowers are peaking
their green tips
edging up the dirt

raindrops are glistening
dropping from the petals to the leaves
the winter is gone
the spring is here

April’s shower brought
a May flower
.

Trying to Grow
April Showers Bring May Flowers
the sun doesn’t shine
when you need to grow

It’s the mistakes and the misery
that make us beautiful in the end

Things I like

Thinking of things that I like:

  • The smell of books and hearing the crack of the spine
  • The heft of a book and turning the pages, dog-earing them
  • Reading
  • The last page of a novel read first
  • Rainbows
  • Sun showers
  • Rivulets
  • Snowflakes
  • Fireplaces
  • Greyish blue and purple
  • Cuddly animals
  • Anything that makes me feel nice and cozy inside
  • Listening to music while dropping off to sleep
  • Drinking Ice Tea on a hot summer day
  • Lily-of-the-valleys
  • Falling in love with a book or movie character
  • The symbolic things I like are
    • circles
    • pathways
    • doorways
    • boxes
  • Love that makes my soul happy
  • Words that sound like their meaning like 'soft,' 'whisper'
  • Trees with lots of branches and no leaves
  • The colour Red

Spring to Summer

Having returned home from Australia as the season there turned from Summer to Fall, it is a bit of a shock to come back to Winter falling into Spring. I walk along the Fraser every day rain or shine. I enjoy the walk.  When I was walking in Australia, the fall flowers were out, the leaves were just starting to turn from green to golden.  Here the trees are bare, and winter still seems to be holding on. One of the things I learned in Australia that when you watch and observe very closely on a daily basis, change can become magical.

Lately I have started to notice that the scene is starting to shift toward spring. The foliage closest to the ground is slowly starting to turn green, the odd brave flower is poking its head up along the path. Everyday I notice more greenery, today I noticed the fist blooms on a couple of trees. Renewal is starting, little by little, the forest along my walk is starting to come to life. Spring is a time for hope, renewal and new growth. I look forward to the changes that will come along the path I take along the Fraser and to the renewal and hope that Spring brings to all of us.

Hail, Rain, and wind

I love these days, the wind is blowing the clouds away, the sun is shining but not warm. Suddenly everyone is running as hail comes out of nowhere. The hail turns to heavy rain, then the wind picks up again and just as suddenly as they appeared the rain, hail and clouds are gone. Spring on the west coast, energy flowing, life is good on the west coast. I read a wonderful post on one of the blogs I follow The Legislature Raids which is partly quoted below for the full post check out the blog:

The perfect explanation from an unexpected source: why we stand up for British Columbia

BC Mary comment: This is the best-ever explanation of what drives so many of us to protect one thing after another ... BC Rail ... BC Hydro ... BC rivers ... and so many issues that create the beautiful province we once knew. We owe great appreciation to Alexandra Morton who stuck to her one issue and has explained it so well, all along, but never so broadly as today's message ... "

My hope is that the Boomers will remember that we have to set the example and be the first to stand up and be counted.
